OVERVIEW

You're All My Favorites

Mommy and Daddy Bear convince three worried cubs that there's plenty of love to go around in this comforting new tale from the incomparable team of Sam McBratney and Anita Jeram.

Every night, while tucking in their three cubs, Mommy and Daddy Bear tell them they're the most wonderful baby bears in the whole wide world. But one day the three little bears start to wonder: How do Mommy and Daddy know this is true? And even more worrisome to each sibling: What if my parents like my brother or sister better than me?

From the team who brought us the beloved Big and Little Nutbrown Hare comes a tale that answers a timeless question with the ultimate reassurance - and offers the perfect way for parents to remind their own little cubs how very much each one is loved.

This is the story of two Nutbrown Hares, Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare. The two are never stated to be father and son in the original storybooks, though are referred to as such in the narration for the animated television series.

Little Nutbrown Hare asks Big Nutbrown Hare the titular question, "Guess how much I love you?", and the book continues as the two use larger and larger measures to quantify how much they love each other in answer to the question. The story is simple, but effectively shows the love the two share for each other.

Little Nutbrown Hare, who was going to bed, held on tight to Big Nutbrown Hare's very long ears.  He wanted to be sure that Big Nutbrown Hare was listening.

"Guess how much I love you," he said.

"Oh, I don't think I could guess that," said Big Nut brown Hare.

"This much," said Little Nutbrown Hare, stretching out his arms as wide as they could go.

Big Nutbrown Hare had even longer arms. "But I love you this much," he said.

Hmm, that is a lot, thought Little Nutbrown Hare.

"I love you as high as I canreach," said Little Nutbrown Hare.

"I love you as high as I canreach," said Big Nutbrown Hare.

That is very high, thought Little Nutbrown Hare. I wish I had armslike that.

Then Little Nutbrown Hare hada good idea. He tumbled upside down and reached up the tree trunkwith his feet.

"I love you all the way up to my toes!" he said.

"And I love you all the way upto your toes," said Big Nutbrown Hare, swinging him up over hishead.

"I love you as high as I canhop!" laughed Little Nutbrown Hare, bouncing up anddown.

"But I love you as high as Ican hop," smiled Big Nutbrown Hare-and he hopped so high that hisears touched the branches above.

That's good hopping, thought Little Nutbrown Hare. I wish I couldhop like that.

"I love you all the way downthe lane as far as the river," cried Little Nutbrown Hare.

"I love you across the river and over the hills," said Big Nutbrown Hare.

That's very far, thought Little Nutbrown Hare. He was almost too sleepy to think anymore.

Then he looked beyond the thornbushes, out into the big dark night.  Nothing could be farther than the sky.

"I love you right up to the moon," he said, and closed his eyes.

"Oh, that's far," said Big Nutbrown Hare. "That is very, very far."

Big Nutbrown Hare settled Little Nutbrown Hare into his bed of leaves.

He leaned over and kissed him good night.

Then he lay down close by and whispered with a smile,

"I love you right up to the moon ----

and back."

Review

This is an enchanting little story, with homey illustrations that add to its appeal. It will be particularly reassuring to read aloud on those dark and stormy nights.
-School Library Journal (starred review)

The palette of colors is a strong part of the reassuring feeling here...Mother Bear and Sam play out the conventional dance of ritualized bedtime ballets, and her patient largeness as she bends to deliver yet another kiss is a dream of parental love.
-Chicago Tribune

About the Author

Amy Hest is the author of many books, including WHEN JESSIE CAME ACROSS THE SEA, winner of the Christopher Medal and illustrated by P. J. Lynch, and IN THE RAIN WITH BABY DUCK, winner of the BOSTON GLOBE - HORN BOOK Award and illustrated by Jill Barton. She says that she was inspired by her own son, Sam. "When Sam was small he knew countless ways to keep me in his room at bedtime," she remembers.

Anita Jeram is the illustrator of the best-selling GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU by Sam McBratney. She is also the author-illustrator of BUNNY, MY HONEY and ALL TOGETHER NOW. About KISS GOOD NIGHT, she says it reminds her of when "the children and I are comfortable and safe, tucked up snug in bed, listening to the rain outside the window and everything around seems to glow with the warmth."

It was a dark and stormy night on Plum Street. In the little white house, Mrs. Bear was putting Sam to bed.

Outside, the wind blows and the rain comes down. Inside, it is Sam's
bedtime. Mrs. Bear reads him a story, tucks him in, and brings him warm milk. "Are you ready now, Sam?" she asks. "I'm waiting," he says. What else does Sam need before he'll go to sleep? Could Mrs. Bear have forgotten a kiss?

Now this NEW YORK TIMES best-selling story by two of the most beloved picture book creators is available in a board book edition suitable for the youngest listeners.
